Next is the much lauded Hatoful Boyfriend

That was in a humble bundle just fyi so a lot of people picked it up and a few other VNs for ~$5 in total

True enough. Regardless, at least on Steam, any VN that launched with a high price...doesn't sell. Or sell well, at least. It's just a thought.

Also I wish it had least got a Steam pop up, like "Muv Luv, now available" but I guess they didn't opt in for that. Clannad had one.

Clannad actually sold very well in it's first week, it was in the top 5 spot for a couple of days. Comparing sales of Nekopara/Sakura titles to story driven VNs are apples to oranges, it's a different demographic and has a wider general appeal, cause well, sex. If pricing is a factor for more skeptical buyers, then they'll just be waiting for a steam sale, but it'd be detrimental to undersell a title as big as Muv Luv.

My guess is some of them are waiting for either Alternative to play both together or the patch for the censored content.

I'm waiting for the patch. The implied scenes are just weird to me, not that I mind but it feels admits.

A actual VN. Well, it's a Sakura title...but you get the gist.  It has 285,000 copies sold. Barrier to entry is only 10 bucks though. Also full of TnA.

Next is the much lauded Hatoful Boyfriend:

10 bucks.   240,000 owners.

Those tittles where sold for 1-3 USD with other games in more than one humble bundle, so that's cheating too.

Also Nekopara has pron in the first day (if you were able to get your hands in some of the files from the adult version) and the restore patch of Muv-Luv is still in the âge phase.

Can see all the data here: http://steamspy.com/tag/Visual+Novel

But unless the game has RPG game elements, anything that costs more than 20$ doesn't sell.  By comparison, as said above, Clannad tried for 50$...it sold a few thousand in the first few months. @ 50% off, the number skyrocketed to 30,000.

The problem with comparing Muv Luv to those VNs is that it's comparing a hardcore VN to casual VNs. A better comparison would be to Ame no Marginal and Planetarian, cheap VNs that nonetheless appeal to the hardcore crowd primarily. How did they sell?

The latest SteamSpy data is...interesting.  It's not 100% accuracy, but I think it reflects refunds happening. Refunds are bad...on refunds, Steam keeps their 30% cut, and that comes out of the publishers pockets.  Still, there is another way to read this data.  Overall it hasn't confirmed less sales, it just confirmed there wasn't as many as there -might- have been.

Either way, it's ahead of many other expensive VNS. Still interesting data however.  The average user is playing 10 hours.  Enough for a route and a half, really.

10 hours isn't enough for a route, not even if you read at godlike speed.

It's not enough mostly due to pressing enter and watching animations though. Oh, and listening to the music. Very nostalgic. I can read pretty fast, but all of the text has to be on the screen to do so. I read a trilogy of 600k words in 18ish hours before, really painful on the eyes though. I think Alternative will get a bump in sales.

I agree low prices won't increase sales considerably, the mainstream audience won't be interested unless HBO decided to make a Muv Luv show or something. It should be reasonable enough for VN fans to help pay for costs. Degica can also sell the music if they want, some other games do so as well. I suppose I can rip the music using dragon unpacker but that tends to strip the names out from the files (Astro Avenger 2 had some pretty good music which I assigned random names to)
