Other Notable VNs

86 posts in this topic

I know, some of you are probably thinking "Heresy! Blasphemy! Sodomy!" but the fact is, we need a place for us ML fans to come together and discuss what other noteworthy VNs we might have read in our time before, or since, our exposure to the great one (Obviously ML).

So, without further ado, I suppose I'll get us started... A common trend I've noticed on the "How'd You First Get Into Muv Luv" thread is that alot of us got introduced to VNs via Fate/Stay Night. That one sorta seems to be the gateway drug for VN-culture.

I started out with Key's Kanon and Planetarian. The first one may be average to generic by nowaday's standards, but it set up lots of tropes found in subsequent visual novels (especially romance ones), so reading it was a walk down history lane for me. Planetarian is short and sweet. Afterwards I moved to the Nasuverse entries (Tsukihime, Fate/stay night and the Garden of Sinners light novel series), before getting on to Muv-Luv and Alternative. Deus Machina Demonbane (a super robot VN infamous for its part in powerlevel arguments discussions, and its English localization had a Duke Nukem Forever reputation among VN readers) got officially released in the West around the same time frame, so I got on it too.

G-senjou no maou ( The devil on G-string ) since it is my first one I read getting into VNs and is still a favorite of mine. Just in case you don't know it, its a VN about Yakuza, terrorism and revenge.

Katawa Shoujo (the demo) was my first entry into VNs (kinda embarrassing to admit) ^^; never actually played Fate/Stay... nor any other VNs that don't have an English language release..

Analogue: A Hate story and Planetarian are two that really stood out for me though (fantastic writing, both of them)... and NekoPara V1 (couldn't resist the catgirls >.>)

Well, as most people do, I started of in Nasu-verse for FSN. But uniquely, I read the translation script, so can't exactly call my first VN.
[Yup, you ain't see wrong thing, translation script, not the game]

Then, my next "official" VN is the other honorable mention in Sci-Fi genre of VN:
Steins;Gate

And it remained in my top two VN franchise. With ML-verse at the peak.

Maou was a great one, I rank it right up there with Muv Luv. There's another Akabei title that SilvaChief's been encouraging me to finish called Sharin no Kuni.

Why be embarrassed? I think it's probably one of the better OELVNs out there. And thanks to its 4chan ties, it got decent exposure and helped bring more interest to VNs.

Planetarian was indeed short and sweet, and some of its content reminds me of another VN I happen to love dearly, which may be one of the lesser-known titles mentioned here... Hoshizora no Memoria. The common tie being stars and such.

The why is a little tricky to explain... though I think in part it falls back to when it came up in a conversation with my sister; not easy explaining the merits of a game which at a basic level is about dating girls with disabilities, even though it did a great job at handling the subject material ^^;

I have played quite a few VNs. My first was Fate/Stay night and my favourite is DEFINITELY Muv-luv alternative, those that I feel it's good enough to recommend would be Tsukihime and Ever 17. And there is one that I really like but wouldn't really recommend to everyone...

Spoiler

Saya no Uta, arguably one of the most gory and disturbing VN out there.

Btw, though not really a VN, I would highly recommend those of you who have played Fate/Stay Night to read the Fate/Zero LN. I know it was already adapted to anime but it was REALLY good read for me.

Ah, Ever 17 ! Might I suggest the Zero Escape series as well then ? ( Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors aka 999 and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, writing all done by Kotaro Uchikoshi)

Well, most of the Type Moon VNs. Most of the Key VNs. Grisaia..... uhh.... Tsuyokiss series. Nitro+ VNs. Dangan Ronpa series. Ricotta VNs (Walkure Romanze, Princess Lover). Guilty Crown Lost Xmass. KimiNozo. My Girlfriend is the President. Saya no Uta (thanks Vicious). Toradora VN (PSP). OreImo 1st (PSP). Oh! Baldr Sky! And most notably for me, Steins;Gate.

And many other that don't come to mind.

Higurashi is really good and short, it is on steam for only $4.50 as of now. And the second one is coming out very soon

Eushully's Ikusa Megami franchise was my first real contact with visual novels if I remember correctly. And to this day it remains as one of my most beloved game series ever. Many manly tears were shed over the years. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Bit of a shame that newer Eushully titles aren't as good though.

Utawarerumono is another all-time favourites of mine. Even after all these years, I'm still captivated by its unique world setting! I can also whole heartly recommend its sequel Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen for everyone who can understand Japanese. Its saga is just EPIC (!)

For Utawarerumono 2, I'm either gonna have to get off my ass and learn the language, or hope that it gets a translation...

And regarding Eushully, I've only really been exposed to Kamidori, which is fun, but I just don't really make enough time to actually play it...

I really need to get back on reading non-nukige VNs...

Saya no Uta was good.

I still haven't finished Demonbane or Majikoi and I have a load of titles I want to read but I am a professional procrastinator.

Saya no Uta... Was not something I enjoyed. Not in the way that it was bad, but more in the way of... Well... How do you enjoy that kind of subject matter? Still, to me, it had a certain grotesque beauty, so I can forgive that it was less enjoyable in my eyes. It did incite a reading spree for me, so there is that.

I'm fighting the urge to just list off every VN I have read or am reading... The post might become word soup if I do that...

My 1st was 999 and my favorite is Ever17. I've also played Planetarian, Hakuoki, Hatoful Boyfriend, and not much else. I have yet to play Muv Luv.

Mine too. I think I downloaded it from Kazaa or something and it took like half an hour even though it was like 2 MB. Ah, the terrible days of Dial-up...

Some things that haven't been mentioned:
Rewrite- Hard to explain without spoilers, but supernatural stuff happens (mostly) in a High School setting. Written by Key, Romeo Tanaka (Kana Imouto, Cross Channel, Yume Miru Kusuri), and Ryukishi07 (When They Cry) so you know it's got a solid story.
Phenomeno - Mitsurugi Yoishi wa Kowagaranai- One of the lesser-known Nitro+ games. Short and super scary for absolutely no reason. It's one of those things where you most of the horror is the mood, music, and writing causing you to scare yourself. I don't scare easily, but this really got to me.
Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO- The graphics and gameplay have aged really poorly but if you can get past that, this is one of the best VNs ever made. Good retro music and a sci-fi/fantasy story that is totally worth dealing with the oldness of the game. They're doing a remake next year but who knows if/when we'll see that.

My first VN was Fate Stay Night. Though admittedly, I only was curious enough to read it because of the porn. Been a VN fan ever since.

My top 15 VN's are

Top

1. Muv Luv Alternative (duh)

2. Sengoku Rance/Kichikuou Rance (The Rance series is a ton of fun and worth playing for the gameplay itself. The hilarious sex scenes and great fantasy world building are also very interesting.)

3. Fate/Stay Night

4. Rewrite (The only multi-route Key VN I've played where I actually liked all of the routes. Haven't played Air or Kanon yet though.)

5. Chou Dengeki Stryker (A really fun  cyborg superhero VN that fires up the little kid in me. Don't take it too seriously though.)

6. Ever17 (Terrible pacing, but still an extremely good mystery VN regardless. That true ending)

7. Forest (Mindfuck the VN)

8. Little Busters (Because Clannad is overrated. Bros over hoes.)

9. Tsukihime (Would be higher if professional quality like F/S N and probably beat it too.)

10. OtoBoku (Pseudo Yuri moege, but still good enough for me as a yuri fan)

11. Sharin no Kuni (Same creator as G-Senjou. More atmospheric, though the ending is weaker. The fan disk explains any lingering questions.)

12. G-Senjou no Maou (Not as good as Sharin no Kuni IMO though still great. A shame that the Steam version has issues; the way they cropped the images to make them compatible with the widescreen is atrocious.)

13. Monster Girl Quest (It's just really fun, and the puzzle RPG battles are really neat.)

14. Demonbane (A very fun Super Robot VN, though the event that makes it infamous in power level discussions only happens in the sequel.)

15. Sekien no Ignanock (A very poetic steampunk VN. Gahkthun from the same series is getting an official release soon and has mecha.)

My top favorite VN is G-Senjou with Muv Luv right after it. Some of my other favorites are Sharin no Kuni, Grisaia, Saya no Uta, anything by Key, and Marunomi (I actually wouldn't recommend this one to people even though it's a favorite of mine).

Demonbane was excellent, if a bit too porny for my tastes. It had the King of Braves and Midorikawa voicing roles though, so I didn't mind it that much :D

Marunomi was bizarrely heartwarming. Not for the faint of heart though; lolis everywhere.

Speaking of not for the faint of heart, I'm hyped for Euphoria. Already preordered it.

Virtue's Last Reward was my first.  Other notable one's I've finished were Saya no Uta (which is what got me hooked to VNs), Swan Song, and YU-NO.
